Book Details
This book offers exciting and often surprising insights into a hundred different diseases that have occurred over the past hundred years. The period the authors focus on runs from 1923, when the Catholic University in Nijmegen, now Radboud University, was founded, to 2023, the year the university celebrates its centenary. Each disease described has its place within this century, assigned for scientific and/or social and historical reasons. Thus, this book can be read as a series of descriptions of temporally placed degenerative disorders, inflammations, infections, malignant neoplasms, immunological diseases, developmental disorders, genetic diseases and psychiatric disorders. Each disease description is accompanied by vivid illustrations, mostly from the Museum of Anatomy and Pathology collection at Radboud University Medical Centre. Each disease description also includes a critical commentary and a brief historical framework. Where relevant, scientific findings by Dutch, and in particular Nijmegen researchers, are highlighted. Finally, each disease description contains an English summary.
Over honderd ziekten (A Century of Diseases) is accessible to a broad audience interested in pathology, ranging from staff and students of Radboud University and Radboudumc to those involved in every conceivable facet of health care - including, of course, patients.
