Handelingen (‘Acts’) is an academic journal for researchers, lecturers, students and professionals written to keep them abreast of the current state of teaching and research in practical theology and religious studies. The journal showcases the relevance of knowledge and educational innovation to the themes, questions and problems that concern religion, care, education and governance. The contributions promote an independent and critical assessment of the current ecclesiastical, religious and ideological developments in society for the benefit of pastors, spiritual carers, teachers of religion and other theologians and religious academics. Every issue centres on a practical, relevant religious theme in the public domain, with contributions from relevant experts within and outside the field. The starting point is that contributions should appeal to readers on an academic level, and in an attractive and relevant format. Handelingen is the journal for academics and professionals involved in practical theology and religious studies that informs, engages and stimulates discussion about religion, spirituality, meaning, orientation in life and community forming.

2021 We are proud to announce the official opening of the Radboud University Press on the 29th of October 2021. Radboud University Press is a new department at Radboud University, a Diamond Open Access publisher of high-quality academic peer-reviewed books and journals across a wide range of disciplines.
Our ‘Diamond’ label makes us unique, and means that we offer open-access publications free of charge for both authors and readers. Meeting the highest academic standards is our primary goal. Empowering our authors to fully retain their copyrights is our main principle.
‘The current system of scientific publishing is unfair and wrong. We want to break with that,’ explains Mirjam Ernestus, chair of the editorial board. ‘Radboud University Press is not about profit but about quality and impact. Fast, personal and with thorough peer review. And nobody is charged. Not the author, not the editors and not the reader. Research results paid for with public funds must serve society.’
Launch event
At our official launch we look forward to presenting to you the first publications by Radboud University Press, from Klaas Landsman and Jan Bransen. We will also be sharing our first journal, Reliëf. Speakers during the launch event will include Marcel Levi (chair of the Dutch Research Council (NWO)) and Han van Krieken (Rector Magnificus of Radboud University).
’For me, one of the main advantages of Radboud University Press is the increased accessibility that comes with Diamond Open Access,’ says Klaas Landsman, one of the first Radboud University Press authors. ‘My previous Open Access book on quantum mechanics was downloaded 273,000 times, while such a book might normally be sold a few thousand times. So with Open Access you gain a factor of 100 in terms of reach. That's a lot! I expect the same for my new book Foundations of General Relativity: From Einstein to Black Holes published by Radboud University Press: a much greater impact thanks to Open Access.‘
If you want to attend this event, receive a review copy of one of our first publications, or schedule an interview with either our publishers or published authors, please contact us at radbouduniversitypress@ru.nl. There will also be a livestream of the event. You can sign up via www.visitorcontrol.com/radboud.

2021 Although his indictment of the education system caused a stir in 2019, little has changed since then, says philosopher Jan Bransen. A revised English edition of his book Gevormd of vervormd? [educated or deformed], which can be accessed worldwide thanks to Radboud University Press, may offer a solution. ‘There is an undercurrent of educational innovation that this book will hopefully feed into.’
In his book Gevormd of vervormd?, published in early 2019, Jan Bransen, professor of Philosophy of Behavioural Science at Radboud University, declared the current education system bankrupt. From primary school onwards, the system skilfully erodes children’s natural eagerness to learn. Instead of supporting pupils’ abilities to teach themselves, schools offer learning products based on what a student ought to know. Bransen called for a form of education in which pupils exert far more influence over their own role, where they gain practical experience outside school and where there is more room for experimentation.

2021 Radboud University Press is proud to announce its publication of:
Foundations of General Relativity: From Einstein to Black Holes.
You can download the PFD for free or buy a hard copy from our website here.
About the Book
This book, dedicated to Roger Penrose, is a second, mathematically oriented course in general relativity. It contains extensive references and occasional excursions in the history and philosophy of gravity, including a relatively lengthy historical introduction. The book is intended for all students of general relativity of any age and orientation who have a background including at least first courses in special and general relativity, differential geometry, and topology. The material is developed in such a way that through the last two chapters the reader may acquire a taste of the modern mathematical study of black holes initiated by Penrose, Hawking, and others, as further influenced by the initial-value or PDE approach to general relativity. Successful readers might be able to begin reading research papers on black holes, especially in mathematical physics and in the philosophy of physics. The chapters are: Historical introduction, General differential geometry, Metric differential geometry, Curvature, Geodesics and causal structure, The singularity theorems of Hawking and Penrose, The Einstein equations, The 3+1 split of space-time, Black holes I: Exact solutions, and Black holes II: General theory. These are followed by two appendices containing background on Lie groups, Lie algebras, & constant curvature, and on Formal PDE theory.
About the Author
Klaas Landsman (1963) has been a professor of mathematical physics since 2001, initially at the University of Amsterdam and since 2004 at Radboud University, where he is a founding member of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics (IMAPP). He was a postdoc at the University of Cambridge from 1989-1997, and a research fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) from 1997—2002. He has been an elected member of the KNAW since 2019. His previous Open Access books include Foundations of Quantum Theory (2017) and The Challenge of Chance (2016). He also wrote two popular science books in Dutch. In 2020 he won the international FQXi essay contest on Undecidability, Uncomputability, and Unpredictability.

2021 Radboud University Press is proud to announce its publication of:
Homo Educandus: Why Our School System is Broken and What We Can Do About It.
This publication is based on a book by the same author: ‘Gevormd of vervormd? Een pleidooi voor ander onderwijs’ which was first published with ISVW Publishers in 2019. We are honored to be able to make this book available for an international audience. You can download the PFD and EPUB for free or buy a hard copy from our website here.
About the Book
Linnaeus made a mistake when he named us Homo sapiens, the wise man. We’re not. We do too many stupid, destructive and irresponsible things to deserve that name. We need to be educated. Fortunately, we can be educated; we can transform ourselves. We are Homo educandus. We educate ourselves.
However, our current school system is broken. It doesn’t support education. It malforms. This is what Jan Bransen argues in this book. According to him, our current school system is based on five incoherent ideas, among them the idea that people need to study for years before they are ready to take part in society, and the idea that students learn because teachers teach. In the first part of the book, Bransen convincingly shows us that these five misapprehensions actually do more harm than good.
But we can do better. There is reason to be optimistic and inspirational. We can improve our education system as is shown in the second part of the book. Applying a dramaturgical analysis of human action Bransen shows how socialization should look like in primary education, how personal development can be supported in secondary education and how qualification can be organized in dual tracks in higher education, integrating learning, working and living over the life course.
About the Author
Jan Bransen is Professor of Philosophy and Academic leader of the Radboud Teaching and Learning Centre at Radboud University in the Netherlands. He studies the capacity of human beings to be related to their own thought and behaviour. Bransen develops arguments to defend the view that reflection is intrinsically edifying. He does so in the areas of Human Nature, Behavioural Science, and Mind and Action.
